Kap Kolka

The journey to Cape Kolka

Cape Kolka" is the northernmost point of the Kurland Peninsula. There the Gulf of Riga meets the Baltic Sea. The most distinctive cape on the coast of Latvia is about 4 hours away from Riga by bus and was our second destination in Latvia. We stayed overnight in the village Kolka, which is about 2km away from the cape. The bus ride was, again, very cheap (for both of us a total of 12,70€), but for the first time we also had to pay a luggage fee of 2,60€ for our big backpacks.

Our experience in Kolka

In the village of Kolka itself there is really absolutely nothing going on, there are only about 750 inhabitants and the buses do not run very regularly. But its said that for summer it is a popular destination and like a local explained to us, it is quite crowded, especially on the weekends. So it was very difficult to find a good and cheap accommodation as spontaneously as we are. We decided to stay in a guesthouse, which was one of the most expensive on our whole trip. We had a small comfortable room with wood paneling, but we shared the bathroom with six other rooms. The kitchen was not available for use in the summer, so we had to ask the landlady for every plate and every glass. But we had planned to stay there only for two nights anyway. On the day of arrival we used the remaining hours of sunshine and had a look at the beach directly in the village. It was really quiet there and there were hardly any other visitors.

For the next morning we had planned to watch the sunrise at the sea. We were in Latvia shortly after the summer solstice and accordingly the sun rose shortly after 5 o'clock. Unfortunately the other inhabitants of the guesthouse were still partying for a long time and when I still couldn't fall asleep at 2am I turned off the alarm for the next morning.

Instead, we slept a little longer and after breakfast we made our way to the cape. We walked along the beach, where many fallen trees and branches gave a very special atmosphere.

At the Cape itself there was of course much more action than. But also here the principle worked great that you just had to walk a few 100 meters to be on your own. But we didn't only want to relax on the beach, but also wanted to see something of nature and hiked through the Slitere National Park, which is located directly at the cape. There was also a small observation tower with a view of the sea.

Later, on the way back to our accommodation, we stopped at one of the many little houses selling smoked fish along the road.Of course we stopped and got something and ate the fish on the spot.

After two nights in Kolka we continued by bus to Kuldiga.
