Preparations for the entry
Bei einer Weltreise während Corona ändern sich die Fragestellungen von „Wo wollen wir als nächstes hinreisen?“ zu „Wo können wir überhaupt einreisen?“ und „was für Dokumente brauchen wir?“. Als wir in Mexiko herausgefunden haben, dass wir nach Guatemala weiterreisen können, informierten wir uns direkt auf der Seite des Auswärtigen Amtes sowie auf der offiziellen Regierungsseite von Guatemala über all die Dinge, die wir für die Einreise beachten müssen. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt (Januar 2021) brauchte man einen negativen Corona-Test, der bei der Einreise nicht älter als 72 Stunden sein darf und man musste ein offizielles Online-Formular mit allen relevanten Informationen ausfüllen und den daraus generierten QR-Code vorweisen können.
Noch bevor wir Flüge buchten, informierten wir uns, wo wir in Mazatlan einen Corona-Test machen können, dessen Ergebnisse wir möglichst schnell erhalten können. Wir fanden online ein medizinisches Diagnosezentrum, das Corona-Tests anbot. Netterweise rief Nazarely für uns dort an, um alles zu klären. Das stellte sich als sehr hilfreich heraus, denn so erfuhren wir, dass wir zwei Möglichkeiten haben: Beim billigeren Test kriegt man einfach telefonisch mitgeteilt, ob man positiv oder negativ ist, beim etwas teureren Test bekommt man auch ein „Zertifikat“, welches das Ergebnis bescheinigt. Da wir ja genau so ein Zertifikat für die Einreise benötigten, zahlten wir den Preis von knapp 2.500 Pesos pro Person (~ 100 €). Fun Fact hierzu: Freunde von uns waren zur gleichen Zeit in einem Bundesstaat an der Grenze zu Guatemala, wo genau so ein Test 4.500 Pesos kostete. Uns wurde noch gesagt, dass wir vollständig nüchtern zu dem Test kommen sollen, was uns wirklich sehr verwunderte, aber wir hielten uns daran. Am nächsten Morgen wurde von uns also ein Nasenabstrich auf beiden Seiten und ein Rachenabstrich genommen. Wir mussten vorher ein Formular ausfüllen, in welchem unsere Symptome oder möglicher Kontakt zu Coronapatienten abgefragt wurden, was auf spanisch gar nicht mal so einfach war. Wir erklärten einfach, dass wir keinerlei Symptome oder Kontakt hatten, aber den Test für unsere Weiterreise benötigen. Der Test selbst war ziemlich unangenehm, aber ging auch schnell vorbei. Wir meldeten außerdem an, dass wir die Ergebnisse auch in Papierform benötigen und uns wurde gesagt, dass wir diese am nächsten Tag schon abholen können.
We also received a mail directly the next morning that our results were negative and could then easily pick up the certificate on site. With this, nothing more was in the way of our departure from Mexico and onward travel to Guatemala!
But Aeromexico saw it differently!
Ein Tag nachdem wir unser negatives Testergebnis in der Hand hielten, war es schon Zeit, sich von Nazarely zu verabschieden! Sie brachte uns am Morgen noch an den Flughafen in Mazatlan, von wo wir erst nach Mexiko City und dann nach Guatemala City weiterfliegen sollten. Auf dem Hinweg zum Flughafen fiel uns schon auf, dass es sehr neblig war, aber das was es auch in den Tagen zuvor und der Nebel hatte sich meist schnell gelegt. Wir checkten also unser Gepäck ein und wurden dabei auch schon nach unseren negativen Test-Ergebnissen und dem QR-Code des ausgefüllten Online-Formulars gefragt. Da alles passte, wurde auf unseren Flugtickets ein Hinweis geschrieben und wir konnten schon weiter durch die Security zum Gate. Kurz vor dem Boarding gab es allerdings die Durchsage, dass die Wetterbedingungen am Flughafen Mazatlan zu schlecht seien, um starten zu können und sich unser Abflug um eine Stunde nach hinten verschiebt! Das konnte nichts gutes für uns heißen, denn wir hatten am Flughafen Mexiko City nur eine gute Stunde zum Umsteigen (was ohnehin schon recht knapp gewesen wäre). Und so musste unser Weiterflug nach Guatemala umgebucht werden, allerdings war dies erst am nächsten Morgen möglich. Wir mussten also eine Nacht in Mexiko City verbringen. Aeromexico konnte uns leider kein Geld beisteuern, da Wetterbedingungen „höhere Gewalt“ sind, aber immerhin mussten wir für den neuen Flug nicht mehr bezahlen. Letztendlich hob unser Flieger 2,5 Stunden später als ursprünglich geplant ab und wir buchten vorher noch schnell ein Zimmer in dem Hostel, in dem wir auch schon ein paar Wochen vorher in der Hauptstadt waren. Also schnupperten wir noch ein letztes Mal Großstadtluft in Mexiko City, wobei wir dieses Mal während des Lockdowns dort waren und die Straßen wie ausgestorben waren.
Bye Mexico, hello Guatemala!
Early in the morning we took an Uber to the Mexico City airport and were way too early. While we were still thinking about getting a coffee and waiting a bit, we decided to check in our luggage. This turned out to be the right decision in the end, as we stood in line for a good two hours. Aeromexico had only two employees who accepted luggage and the individual passengers stood at the counters for 15 minutes. Some apparently still had to fill out the forms on their cell phones and wait for the QR code to be generated. Instead of other passengers being pushed in between during the wait, the staff simply waited along. Other passengers didn't have their documents ready and therefore had to dig everything out one by one. And it happened again and again that employees from another counter came and had questions. Everything at a very relaxed pace - and we could find more than one optimization point with our German efficiency thinking... But fortunately we were so early and could see the waiting time relatively relaxed in contrast to other passengers. When it was our turn, we were also asked about our negative test results. We were very lucky that we were still within the officially allowed 72 hours despite the flight rebooking! Then we quickly ran through security and still had 10 minutes at the gate until boarding began!
But the relaxed flight made up for that, in only 1.5 hours we crossed the border and flew towards the capital of Guatemala, where unfortunately exactly at our time a thunderstorm was reported. Despite the announcement of turbulence, our pilot flew very calmly and the landing on the very short runway was another interesting experience for us. Hello Guatemala! A new country also means a new entry form, which was already handed out to us on the plane.
Out of the plane and on the way to the entrance area of the airport we were directly checked for our negative test results and had to show an entry form, which we already had to fill out on the plane. The woman was very friendly and welcomed us to Guatemala. Similarly friendly it went on at the baggage carousel, when we picked up our backpacks and were checked by an airport employee again, whether we can also show the original stickers to the baggage numbers on our backpacks. We had never had this extra check before. Then we only had to pass the immigration desk, where we were asked in a friendly manner how long we wanted to stay and "Zack" we had the stamp and a visa for the next 90 days!
First we supplied ourselves at an ATM in the airport with the currency in Guatemala - 100 Quetzales correspond to a little more than 10 €. It was exciting for us to hold these new currency in our hands. We also wanted to get Guatemalan sim cards directly in the airport and found a booth for that - but unfortunately there was no contact person on site. We assumed that he was just taking a break and we got something to eat as well. And right, when we came back, an employee sat at the booth, who sold us two sim cards and also took over the necessary settings for us in very fast.
Since we had read in advance that Guatemala City is not necessarily a city where you should stay as a tourist, we had booked an accommodation in Antigua, 40 km away.
